September 20 — Lanse Crane, Chairman of the Board of Canal Insurance Company, announced that David J. Firstenberg will join Canal on October 11 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Firstenberg succeeds John Pollock, who has served as interim CEO since the retirement of Charles M. “Chuck” Timmons, Jr. in December 2009. Mr. Pollock will continue to serve as a Director of Canal.

Mr. Firstenberg has more than 30 years experience in the insurance industry and has served in executive positions at One Beacon Insurance Group, Zenith National and Chubb. Until taking the position at Canal, he was President, Specialty Property and Surety for The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc., in Worcester, Massachusetts.

“We are very pleased that Dave will be joining Canal,” said Mr. Crane. “His strong operating experience, his success at building specialty operations, and his understanding of the independent agency distribution system make him very well suited to lead Canal. Canal has flourished under the ownership and direction of the Timmons family and, with their continued support, Dave will have the opportunity to help write the next chapter in a unique success story.”

Established in 1939 and headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina, Canal Insurance Company is recognized in the industry as a stable, responsive and financially strong insurer of commercial trucking operations.
