The Claims Coverage Counsel position is responsible for handling the coverage aspects of all bifurcated claim files for the Claims Department and for providing regulatory, claims, and legal expertise to the claims teams.
Duties include:
- Providing department-wide coverage technical and legal support as assigned.
- Providing legal opinions on recurring issues as appropriate.
- Handling assigned bifurcated coverage files and other coverage activities.
- Handling coverage-related claims litigation as appropriate. This requires working with the in-house claim teams to gain necessary knowledge of coverage issues, claim litigation management philosophy and techniques, reserving and other relevant factors.
- Providing guidance and advice to claim supervisors on technical or process-related topics.
- Assisting in developing technical knowledge within the department by delivering claims related training as necessary.
- Identifying and recommending solutions for improving efficiency, productivity, and fair claims handling specifically related to coverage verification, litigation avoidance and litigation case management.
- Participating in the development of strategies to reduce legal expenses and improve claims results.
- Ensuring effective use of litigation management systems.
- Supervising attorneys on litigated claims

Candidates for consideration must have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or a related field. A Juris Doctorate with advanced knowledge of insurance law is also required. Candidates should have a minimum of ten years claims handling experience in a property and casualty environment, five years minimum experience in handling coverage issues related to commercial auto and general liability insurance, as well as prior bad faith claims avoidance and handling experience.
Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication, organizational and writing skills. The ability to solve problems in a prompt, logical and efficient manner is a must. The successful candidate will be detail oriented and a strong team player.
